TRANSPORTRAITS
For Transportraits I created oil-painted landscapes using instructions from Bob Ross', "The Joy of Painting." The backdrops call attention to the artist's hand and set the stage for nature as fabrication while examining the connections between gender and photography as sites of misplaced veracity. In Transportraits I invite the viewer to question these constructs while simultaneously depicting a sincere heroism.
In Transportraits I created a series of heroic portraits that examine representations of American masculinity, photographing transgender men set against a created environment. With a nod to 19th century portrait and landscape artists such as John Singer Sargent and Alfred Jacob Miller, I simultaneously reference classic and contemporary photographic portraiture and consider the origination of American male identity.
